What is Psychotherapy?
In a general sense, psychotherapy is about personal growth. In the early stages, your therapist will help you identify the problems and defenses or survival responses that developed during your life, often beginning in childhood. One goal is to replace those automatic responses that may not be working for you with thoughts and responses that are better suited to your life as it is now.
Together, you and your therapist will develop a plan to make the changes needed to achieve lasting, long-term success.
As you grow, negative emotional responses decrease and positive reactions and functionality increase. Eventually, you learn to recognize and manage responses, effectively becoming your own therapist, allowing you to adjust to the changes and challenges in life by relying on your own internal resources.
